認知症の診断では、NINCDS/ADRDA研究班やDSM-Ⅳの診断基準が使用されています。NINCDS/ADRDA診断基準は1984年以来、いちども修正されることなく広く用いられてきました。2011年にNIA/AAによる診断基準が発表され、実に27年ぶりの改定となります（図1）。

NINCDS/ADRDA（National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association）：国立神経障害・脳卒中研究所（National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke；NINDS）とアルツハイマー病・関連障害協会（Alzheimer‘s Disease and Related Disorders Association；ADRDA）が合同で作成した診断基準
